Information about Ahobilam Temples:

Ahobilam is located in Karnool district of Andhra Pradesh in the hills of the eastern ghats, about 400 KM northwest of Chennai.
The temple consists of nine shrines to Lord Nrisimha located around a 5 KM circle. In addition to the nine shrines, there is a temple for Prahaladavarada Varadhan in the foothills of the mountain. Due to security reasons and the difficulty in performing daily worship, many of the utsava vigrahasof the nine shrines are kept in this temple.

Garuda wished for a vision of Lord Nrisimha in the form of the Avathara. To fulfill his wish, the Lord settled in the hills around Ahobilam in the midst of dense forests in nine different forms. For this reason this hill came to be known as Garudadri, Garudachalam, and Garudasailam.
Ahobilam is the place where the Lord killed Hiranyakasipu and saved Prahalada. Mahalakshmi took avathar as Senjulakshmi among the Senju, tribal hunters of the hills, and married the Lord.
Sri Ahobila Muth, one of the most important Sri Vaishnava religious institutions in India, was established by Sri Athivan Satakopan at the instructions of Lord Lakshmi Nrisimha of Ahobilam. In fact, the utsava moorthy of the Malola Nrisimha temple, one of the nine shrines of Ahobilam, is the presiding deity of Sri Ahobila Mutham. Sri Malolan accompanies Srimad Azhagiya Singar, the spiritual and titular head of Sri Ahobila Mutham, on his travels.

The Nine Narasimhasthalas are:-
1. Jwala Narasimha 2. Ahobilam Narasimha 3. Malola Narasimha 4. Kroda Narasimha 5. Karanja Narasimha 6. Bhargava Narasimha 7. Yogananda Narasimha 8. Chatravata Narasimha and 9. Pavana Narasimha.

The shrine of the Ahobilam temple is situated on the top of the first range and is referred to as Upper Ahobilam and down below is called Lower Ahobilam. A huge temple surrounded by a number of buildings can be seen at the Upper Ahobilam. The main shrine or the "sacro sanctum" at Upper Ahobilam was carved out of a big egg like rock with mandapams. There is a tank here, which supplies water to the residents of the Upper Ahobliam temple. It is mainly for growing flowers for the shrine.

There is a Lower Ahobilam in the below with a big temple and enclosures, It was built according to the South Indian style. Thousands of pilgrims can stay here in this temple. The priests of both Upper and Lower Ahobilam stay there even today.

Nava Naarasimha Sthothram(prayer):

“Jwala hobilamalola Krodakarascha Bhargavaha

Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple or Yadagirigutta is a popular Hindu Temple of Narasimha Swamy, an incarnation Lord Vishnu It is situated on a hillock in the Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, Yadagirigutta is at a distance of 6 KM from Riagir Railway station and at a distance of 13 KM from Bhongir Town and 60 kilometers from the city of Hyderabad.

Mythological Significance

In Tretayugam, there lived a sage by the name of Yadarishi, son of the great sage Rishyasrunga and Santa Devi who did penance inside a cave with the blessings of Anjaneya (Hanuman) on this hill between Bhongir (Bhuvanagiri) and Raigiri (Now in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, India). Pleased with his deep devotion, Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu appeared before him in five different forms as Sri JwalaNarasimha ,Sri  Yogananda,  SriGandabherunda, Sri Ugra and Sri  Lakshminarasimha. All these five forms (roopas) are presently worshipped within the temple. They later manifested themselves into finely sculpted forms that later came to be worshiped as Pancha Narasimha Kshetram.

There are Purana and traditional accounts of this Shrine, which are widely popular among the devotees. There is mention about the origin of this temple in the Skanda Purana, one of the famous 18 puranas.
Glowing bright atop the sikharam of garbha griha (Sanctum Sanctorum) of this cave temple is the golden Sudarshana Chakra (about 3 ft x 3ft) of Lord Vishnu (whose reincarnation is Lord Narasimha), the adornment as well as the weapon is a symbol this temple is identified by from as far away as 6 km. It is said that many years ago the chakra moved in the direction from which the devotees came as if like a compass guiding them towards the temple. The Chakra Considered to possess mystic power and value, at times turns on its own ; no human hand is capable of turning it.

Another Legend also has it that Sriman Narayana, pleased with Yada's penance, sent Sri Anjaneya to direct the rishi to a holy spot, where the Lord appeared to him in the form of Sri LakshmiNarasimha. This spot is marked by a temple located at the foot of the Yadagiri hillock, and is located about 5 km from the present temple. There the sage worshiped the Lord for many years.

After Yadarishi attained moksha, a number of tribals, hearing of the Lord's presence, came to worship Him at this temple. But, not being very learned, these devotees began to engage in improper worship. Because of this, Sri LakshmiNarasimha moved into to the hills. The tribals searched for many years to find their Lord, to no avail.
After many years had passed, the Lord appeared in the dream of a devout lady among the tribe, directing her to a large cavern wherein He revealed Himself to all as five majestic Avatars.

The Aradhanam and Puja in this temple are performed according to Pancharatra Agamam. The puja vidhanam (Puja procedure) was set by Late Sri Vangeepuram Narasimhacharyulu who composed Yadagiri Suprabhatam, Prapatti, Stotram, Mangalashasanam and served as Sthanacharya of this temple.

There is a ancient Inscription at kolanupaka Jagaddevuni Narayana Swamy Temple  saying that  After christ inthe yaer of  1148 The King Tribhuvana   Malludu  win  the bottle in andhra pradesh  He Established a fort on Ekashila Hillock at Bhongir in respect of for his  Victory  in Andhra Pradesh . At the same time he visited lord Lakshmi Narasimha swamy several Times .

In 15th Century the Vijayanagara Samrjya Samrat Sri Krishnadevarayalu wroted in his autobiography that while he going to war he Visited the temple and prayers the lord for victory .and also he got a son on the mercy of Lord Nrusimha Swamy.

Simhachalam - Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple,

SIMHACHALAM (' the lion hill'), which rises to about 800 feet about the sea, stands just north of Visakhapatnam. Near the top of the north side of it, in a wooded hollow surrounded by a wide circle of higher ground, is the temple to Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Vishnu, which gives the hill its name. This is the most famous, richest, and best sculptured shrine in Visakhapatnam, and in its honour number or the people of the district are named Simhachalam, Simhadri, Narasimha and so on. From the hollow in which is stands, a deep glen, watered by a rivulet and clothed with many trees in striking contrast to the bare flanks of the rest of the hill, runs down to the foot of the northern slope, where, about ten miles be road from Visakhapatnam, is a rose-garden which is traditionally declared to have been planted by the well-known Sitarama Raju of Vijayanagaram and is watered from the rivulet.

The Rajas of Vijayanagaram have been wardens of the shrine for over two centuries and have endowed it with land of 11,000 acres for its maintenance. The way up to the temple runs along the glen from near the rose-garden, through terraced fields of pineapples dotted with mango, jack and other trees. It passes up a broad flight of well-kept stone steps, over a thousand in number, on either side of which trees have been planted to give shade and a rill runs in a stone channel to refresh weary pilgrims. At frequent intervals are images of the various. Hindu gods in little niches, and on festival days the steps are lighted from top to bottom, The steps eventually reach the narrow mount of the glen, and here the path is barred by a bold portal called Hanuman's gate, by the side of which the rivulet which passes down the glen is led in to two pools where pilgrims bathe before they continue the ascent. This gate was apparently part of the fortifications which on former days guarded the temple and other remains of which may be traced on the high ground surrounding it. Tradition says that these included as many as 24 bastions. Passing through Hanuman's gate, the pilgrim traverses a narrow part of the glen where the rivulet is led through pipes and channels over several artificial cascades surrounded by more sculptures of the gods, and at length reaches the amphitheater in which, on a terrace partly cut of the hill-side, stands the temple itself..

Vedadri  - Yoga Narasimha Swami

The Vedadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple is located on the river Krishna, approximately 10 kms from Jaggaiahpet. Here the main deity is: Yogananda Lakshmi Narasihma Swamy.

The importance of this place is Here the Lord is existing in five forms different from each other known as Pancha Narasimha Moorthy, namely Jwala Narasimha on vedasikhara of the mountains, Saligrahma Narasimha in the River Krishnaveni, Yogananda Narasimha consecrated by sage Rishya Sringar, as Lakshmi Narasimhar on his own peetam and Veera Narasimhar on Garudadri situated at a distance of 5kms from east to Vedadri.

Sri Yogananda LakshmiNarasimha Swami Temple Raja Gopuram.

The Brahma Purana says Somasura stole the Vedas from Brahma, and hid himself into the ocean. Lord Brahma approached Lord Vishnu to help him out to get back the Vedas from the asura. Sriman Narayana took the form of fish {Mathsaya Avatara} and entered deep into the ocean and rescued Vedas from asura. The Vedas took human form and thanked Lord Vishnu, and asked Lord to stay with them on their heads. Lord agreed to stay till the time comes and he asked them to stay in River Krishnaveni as Saligrama stone. After Hiranayakasipu vadha, Lord Narayanar who incarnated himself as Narasimha Swamy, stayed as Jwala Narasimhar on the mountains head at Vedadri in fulfillment of his words to Veda Purushas. Lord Brahma requested Jwala Narasimha to stay at Sathya loka as Saligrahama, and Lord Narasimhar obliged to do so. Even before Lord Brahma could offer his prayer to Lord, sathya lokha was consumed in flames. Lord brahma personally brought the Saligrahma moorty to the River Krishnaveni and erected it on the Saligrahma mountain. Krishnaveni prayed to Narayanar, to allow her to worship him daily. Here Lord Lakshi Narshimar the incarnation of Sriman arayanar fulfilled the desire of both veda purusha and river Krishnaveni.

The temple structure is conventional, being brightly colored and ornamented with a variety of images. A beautiful Form of Narasimha Swami in yoga pose (below) greets devotees on the outside of the temple. The Lord is joined by murtis of Lord Varaha, Laksmi devi, Garuda, Hanuman, and other transcendental personalities and figures. The utsava idols are extraordinarily high and impressive, and the Dwajasthamba of imposing girth and height. In the waters of the Krishna River, Lord Narasimhar can also be found in Salagram form.

The legend goes to impress that the sacred Vedas took the form of hill to bear upon its head the Yogananda Narasimhaswamy -the presiding deity in this kshetra. And the sage Rishyasringa is said to have installed the icon in Tretayuga. This ancient kshetra lies on the bank of river Krishna and famous as the Pancha Narasimha kshetra. There are independent temples existing at different places. The Principal icon is called Yogananda Lakshmi Narasimh aswamy and reveals with four hand, the upper ones adorned with the disc and conch whereas the lower two holding. the Yogananda. There are two separate mandirs for Rajyalakshmidevi and Godadevi and they are elegantly built. It is in the same campus there is another shrine for lakshmi Narasimhaswamy, the second of the five dedicated to the Lord. The third one, an ant-hill is found on the top of the hill and is called Jwalanarasimhaswamy.

The fourth one is said to be in the river Krishna in the salagram form and gives Darshan only when the river recedes backwards. The fifth one is found on the hill called Garudachalam, and it lies ata short distance to this. The deity is called by two names - Vugranarasimhaswamy and Viranarasimhaswamy. All these places are exercising great pull on the Narsimhopaskas in particular and theists in general. Vaikhanasa agama worship is offered in all the Panchanarasimha kshetras.

The Kalyanotsav falling in the month of Vaisakha Suddha Eakadasi is celebrated on a grand scale. Another annual festival that lures huge crowds is Narasimha Jayanthi. Besides the locals, thousands from far off places to visit on account of its antiquity and the ease accessibility of the Lord. The adorers are uplifted, and none goes back in despair after offering soulful prayers.

Antharvedhi - Aanandha Narasimha Swami

Antarvedi also popularly known as “Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South), is a rather important pilgrim centre in the East Godavari district of the state of Nawabs AP. This little village is situated at the most interior part on the East coast of AP.

It is said that Lord Brahma, the creator in order to get freed from the many sins that he had committed against the liberator Lord Shiva, had performed a Rudrayaga and installed an idol Lord Neela kantheswara there. As the place was made like a stage or “Vedik” to perform the Yaga, it got its name as “ANTARVEDI”

Antarvedi is a small village in Sakhinetipalle Mandal which is very close to Narsapur near the Vashishtha River. This river is said to have been brought in by the famous Maharishi Vashishtha- one of the seven great sages of the Hindu Mythology.

The place draws people from the world over throughout the year owing to its unique rarity: the merging of the mighty Bay of Bengal and Vashishtha River, which is a tributary of the River Godavari.

The place of confluence where the mighty ocean and the river is called the “Sapta Sagara Sangam Pradesam”. It is also known as the “Anna Chelli Gattu”, by the locals. Take a sip of the water here and you will find it sweet and rather cool and pleasant. This place is one of the most seven sacred bathing places of India. Mythology also has it that the Tretha Yugam episode of Ksheera Sagara Mathanam took place here.

The temple is called as an island temple because it is located where the ocean and river meet. This temple is known to be very unique as the main Deity i.e. the Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy faces towards West instead of East which is the usual direction of all temples in India. This is one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu and was constructed sometime between the 15th and 16th century. This temple has an impressive 5 storeyed Vimana Gopuram.

As soon as one enters this beautiful temple one can find the Garuda idol on one side and Bhaktha Anjaneya on the other side of the temple entrance. While approaching the “Garbha Gudi” which is the center or in other words the Sanctum of the temple, one can see “Vatapatra Sayi” on its roof. This idol of Lord Krishna on a palm leaf is made out of a single stone. In the Garbha Gudi, devotees can view the magnificent Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy with the Goddess Lakshmi Devi on his lap.

Mangalagiri - Laxmi Narasimha Swamy

Mangalagiri is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams (sacred places) in India. The temple of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha swamy is situated on the hill. On the right side of the steps provided to reach the temple, there is a stone inscription by Sri Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagar and further up, the footprints of Mahaprabhu Chaithanaya are to be seen. Midway on the steps there is a temple of Sri Venkateswara Swamy. In the temple of Lord Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy, there is only the face with the mouth widely opened. Behind the temple, there is the temple of Sri Lakshmi, to the west of which there is a tunnerl, which is believed to lead to Undavali caves on the banks of the Krishna. The Lord that has established Himself on the hill is in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) which Lord Vishnu assumed to kill Hiranyakasipa, A Rakshasa father of Prahlada, a great devotee. He is also called Sudarsana Narasimhaswamy. The legend says that Namuchi, a Rakshasa after great penance obtained a boon from Brahma that he would not be killed by anything that is either wet or dry. He began to harass Indra and the Devathas. Encouraged and supported by Lord Vishnu, Indra commenced destroying the army of Rakshasa Namuchi, who hid in a cave in Sukshmakaram giving up his stulakaram. Indra dipped Sudarsanam, the disc of Lord Vishnu in the foam of the ocean and sent it into the cave. Lord Vishnu manifesting himself at the centre of the disc destroyed the Pranavayuvu of the Rakshasa with the fire of His exhalation. He thus got the name of Sudarsana Narasimha. The blood that flowed from the body of the Rakshasa seemed to have formed into a pool at the foot of the hill, which is known hill. The Lord said that he would be satisfied with milk in Swaparayugam, with ghee in Threthayugam and with panagam (jaggery water) in Kaliyugam.

It is also believed that Lord Rama while departing for Vaikuntam after completing his mission in that incarnation advised Anjaneya to stay at Mangalagiri and after obtaining his blessings to remain in this world forever. Anjaneya took his adobe at Mangalagiri as Kshetrapalaka. The place thus also came to be known as Mukthyadri (the hill that grant Mukthi-salvation).

The image of the Lord in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) and that of Lakshmidevi to His left are of stone. The garland of the Lord with 108 saligramams is of special significance here. Daksjamavartha Sankam, a special conch believed to be the one that was used by Lord Krishna and resented by the Maharaja of Tanjore is one more possession of significance of the Lord. There is also an ancient ratha (temple car) belonging to the temple with ornamental woodcarvings depicting the scenes from the great epics of Bharata, Bhagavata and Ramayana. Thimmaraju Devaraju a military chieftain of the Vijayanagara rulers improved this temple. He had constructed prakarams, mandapas, gopurams, five images of Lord Bhairava, a festival chariot, and ten varieties of courts for annual ceremonies, flower gardens, lakes and tanks. He had also installed utsava vigrahas in the temple. To the north of the temple, there is temple of Sri Rajyalakshmi to the south that of Rama with Sita and Lakshmi and to the west vahanasala. The Lakshminarayana temple and the Anjaneya Mandiram in Pedda Bazar are the other places of worship in the town.

Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Brahmothsavam is very important annual festival. It is believed that the celebration was inaugurated by Dharmaraja at the behest of Lord Krishna. Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna, requested his father to celebrate his brithday annually for a sapthaham from Phalguna Suddha Sapthami. Lord Krishna entrusted this work to Dharmarja. At present, the festival is celebrated for 11 days commencing from phalguna sudda shasti (February-March). The perculiarity in this temple is that jaggery water locally lnown as panakam is poured as an offering to the Lord with a conch. The jaggery water is actually poured into the mouth of the Lord as an offering. While the jaggery water is being poured into the mouth of the Lord, a gargling sound is clearly audible as if the Lord is actually drinking it and the sound becomes shriller and shriller as and when the Lord is drinking. The sound wikk come to a stop after sometimes and the balance of the jaggery water is thrown out. This phenmenon happens not once in a day but is a recurring feature during the course of the day as and when devotees offer panakam. It will be interesting to note that even a single ant s not traceable near the Lord nor around the temple in spite of the offering of so much jaggery water. As the offering of panakam to the Lord is pecuilar, the Lord here is called Panakala Narasimhaswamy. Srirama Navami, Hanumajayanthi, Narasimhajayanthi and Vaikuntha Ekadasi are celebrated here on a large scale.

Panakala Narasimha Swamy - God Who Drinks Panakam

It is said that here, god is self-existent. In the temple, there will be no statue of the god, but there is only mouth, widely opened to 15 cms. The mouth is covered by metal face of the god. The temple will be opened till afternoon only, with the belief that devatas will perform pujas in the night. The God takes jaggery water as offering by a conch. The Jaggery water is actually poured into the mouth of the Lord, a gargling sound is clearly audible as if the Lord is actually drinking it and the sound becomes shriller and shriller as and when the Lord is drinking. The sound will come to a stop after sometime and the balance of the jaggery water is thrown out. This phenomenon happens not once in a day but is a recurring feature during the course of the day as and when devotees offer panakam (jaggery water). It will be interesting to note that even a single ant is not traceable near the Lord nor around the temple in spite of the offering of so much jaggery water. As the offering of the panakam to the Lord is peculiar, the Lord here is called panakala Narasimhaswamy. There is a legend about the offering of the panakam (jaggery water) to the Lord. It is said that the hill was once a volcano. Sugar or jaggery water, it is said, neutralizes sulphur compounds found in a volcano and prevents a volcanic eruption.

Behind the temple there is the temple of Sri Lakshmi, to the west of which there is a natural cave. It is believed that it will lead to Undavalli caves on the banks of the Krishna river and the sages used to go to take bath in Krishna River. Now, the cave is very dark and the way could not be seen. We can reach the temple through steps-way on foot and also by road-way. The steps to the temple were constructed by Sri Channapragada Balarama Dasu in 1890. In 2004, ghat road had been constructed through which the pilgrims can reach the temple easily.

Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple

At the foot of the hill, there is another temple whose origin is traced to the time of Yudhishtira, the eldest of the pandavas. Yudhishtira is said to be the founder of the chief image of this temple and the deity here is called Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. In Vijayawada itself, which is 8 miles from Mangalagiri there is a hill called Indrakeeladri in which Arjuna is said to have done tapascharya (penance) in order to obtain the weapon Pasupata from Lord Siva. About 200 years back Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu who ruled from Amaravati as his capital constructed a stupendous gopuram (tower) on the eastern gate of the Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy. It is one of the highest gopurams in South India and only one of its type in this part of India. It is 153ft. in height and 49 feet wide with 11 storeys, and gates facing east and west. This great and imposing tower dwarfs the central shrine. The devoted patience of thousands of skilled craftsmen and the labour of many more apprentices which had gone into this great structure is a testimony to the religious fervour which characterized the builder. After constructing the gopuram, it was leaning towards one direction. The Kancheepuram Architects suggested to dig a tank opposite to the tower. After digging the tank, it is said that, the tower became straight.
